Abstract The complex interrelationships between demographic patterns and changes on the one hand, and language development, language change, language maintenance and language shift, and language planning, on the other have given rise to an interdisciplinary field known as Demographic Linguistics. This article reviews the key theories and methods that are relevant to this interdisciplinary field. The principal aim is to promote this new field of applied linguistic research in China, where important demographic changes are taking place.
