The Editorial Principles and Academic Features of the
Complete Dictionary of Modern Chinese
Jiang Lansheng
DOI: 10.19689/j.cnki.cn10-1361/h.20220101
The
Complete Dictionary of Modern Chinese
is a large scale original dictionary that contains systematic collection of Chinese vocabulary over the past century. This article attempts to provide an executive introduction about this newly published dictionary with rich illustration of examples drawn from the dictionary. With reference to the earlier Modern Chinese Dictionary, the Complete Dictionary is made on the basis of rich and solid written text and oral data under the guidance of modern linguistic theory and etymology theory and the practical experience of dictionary compilation. In comparison with the Modern Chinese Dictionary, it is characterized by some new concepts: combination of synchronic and diachronic literatures, combination of standard setting and description and combination of practical and academic orientation. Its academic features are manifested in the following four dimensions: first of all, to capture an all-round complete picture of centennial development of Chinese language, it contains vocabularies from both Putonghua (national modern Chinese) and dialects, formal written expressions and colloquial slangs, and modern and archaic usage. It features both prescriptive and descriptive standards with emphasis on the latter, providing convenience for both academic and practical purposes; second, in terms of entry explanation, apart from pursuance in accuracy of basic concept, the dictionary also endeavors to provide supplementary and periphery information, on top of that, for academic purpose, the entry explanation also includes the necessary pragmatic and cultural information with an aim to make explanation richer and more holistic; third, the exemplar illustration manifests itself in multiplication and variation; fourth, the dictionary also contains vocabulary prevalent during the late Qing dynasty and the Republic of China.

How Language Contributes to Rural Revitalization
Yin Qing, Tian Jing and Su Xinchun
DOI: 10.19689/j.cnki.cn10-1361/h.20220102
China has shifted its poverty alleviation campaign into the rural revitalization framework since 2021 in order to promote local industrial development, create more habitable rural environment and propel more prosperity for rural lives. Compared to poverty alleviation, the rural revitalization strategy entails a wider geographical area, a longer time span, and more comprehensive objectives. In terms of language, the diversified regions, people and issues involved in the implementation of the strategy may generate more practical needs in language varieties, competencies and functions. Language is an important carrier of knowledge, information and culture in human society, and different languages can play important roles in various aspects and levels of rural revitalization strategy. In this paper, it is argued that the goals of talent revitalization, organizational revitalization, cultural revitalization, industrial revitalization and ecological revitalization can be achieved by implementing national language and standard Chinese character education, foreign language and cross-border language education, national general sign language and Braille education, as well as reinforcing rural language governance, expanding language services, and developing rural language and cultural resources. It is emphasized that the instrumentality of language can contribute to rural revitalization in so far as language-related schemes are planned scientifically and enforced steadily.

The Language Life of Zhongzha Village in Litang County from the Perspective of Rural Revitalization
Zhao Chunyan
DOI: 10.19689/j.cnki.cn10-1361/h.20220103
Rural revitalization is closely associated with rural people’s linguistic well-being. The urgent task for academics is to understand the reality of language life in rural China. This study reports a field survey of language use, attitudes, and challenges in a Tibetan village, Zhongzha, in Litang County, western Sichuan Province. Zhongzha is multilingual, where Tibetan, Chinese, and English, in order of frequency of use, are spoken. The use of Tibetan language involves a complex relationship among its dialects and Buddhist Tibetan, and Chinese has two varieties:
Putonghua
and Sichuan dialect, but the use of English is limited. The fieldwork uncovered multitudes of the villagers’ language attitudes. The villagers demonstrated different attitudes to the use of Buddhist Tibetan, Tibetan dialects, and
Putonghua
. They also showed different attitudes regarding learning Chinese, Tibetan, and English. The fieldwork also found language challenges to villagers’ well-beings. They faced language barriers in travel, medical care, and online exchanges. Zhongzha village is located in the key area in China’s rural revitalization strategy and is a sample of villages in western China. Viewing the case of multilingual Zhongzha in terms of Bourdieu’s social theory about the linguistic market and the power of information, we suggest increasing efforts in the popularization of the national standard language and script in order to eliminate the villagers’ language barriers in three measures. First, villagers’ basic ability in listening, speaking, reading and writing Chinese should be cultivated to meet their language needs in daily life. The second is to develop villagers’ language information processing ability, giving priority to solving their most concerned, most direct, and most realistic language needs in their well-being. The third is to train and cultivate role models so that they may lead villagers in rural economic and cultural revitalization.

The Influence of
Putonghua
Ability on Farmers’ Subjective Well-Being: From the Perspective of Rural Revitalization
Kang Huilin
DOI: 10.19689/j.cnki.cn10-1361/h.20220104
Based on the questionnaire responses in the
China Labor-force Dynamics Survey
administered by Sun Yat-Sen University, this paper adopts an ordered Logit model and a KHB model to explore how and to what extent
Putonghua
ability can affect farmers’ subjective well-being in the context of rural revitalization. The results of data analysis show that
Putonghua
ability has the potential to improve farmers’ subjective well-being in significant ways, whereby economic capital, social capital, and information skills are important mediating mechanisms. When the mediating effects are controlled, the impact of
Putonghua
remains clear and strong. It is also found that the effect of
Putonghua
ability is more prominent in the regions including Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai, Fujian and Guangdong. In these regions, the mediating effect is mainly mapped as economic capital. In conclusion, the promotion of Putonghua can narrow the gap between urban and rural development, offer farmers equal opportunities for survival and development, and facilitate the integration of urban and rural areas. With these potential benefits, the farmers’ subjective well-being can be improved, and continuous rural revitalization may be advanced.

A Survey of the Current Situation of Hakka Vocabulary Use in Rural Areas in Meixian District
Qiu Chun’an and Yan Xiuhong
DOI: 10.19689/j.cnki.cn10-1361/h.20220105
Based on the empirical data obtained through a small-scale survey, this study examines the current situation of Hakka vocabulary use in rural areas in Meixian District. The findings show that the ability to use Hakka vocabulary manifests an intergenerational downward tendency with age decrease. Whereas the older generation has a stronger ability in vocabulary use, the respondents among the younger generation demonstrate a weaker ability in vocabulary use. As compared with people over the age of 40, adolescent students’ ability to use Hakka vocabulary has seen a radical decline. There are also differences between urban and rural people in their ability to use Hakka vocabulary. The ability of rural inhabitants is stronger than that of people living in the county seat. There exists a negative correlation between the proficiency of Mandarin and the ability to use Hakka vocabulary, and the age of 40 years emerges as a watershed not only for vocabulary mastery but also for
Putonghua
proficiency. This is believed to be closely related to the rural life experience of people over 40 old and the vigorous nationwide promotion of
Putonghua
on primary and secondary school campuses since the 1980s. Some reflections and explorations on the preservation of Hakka dialect and culture are also made from the perspective of the ongoing movement of rural revitalization. The article concludes with two suggestions. One is to effectively integrate dialectal and cultural maintenance with the initiative for intangible traditional heritage protection, so as to form a benign interaction between dialectal and cultural maintenance and local economic development; the other is to make full use of media technology to make the dialect attractive to young people.

Study on the Value and Codification of Farmland Names in Southeast Henan
Zheng Yahao
DOI: 10.19689/j.cnki.cn10-1361/h.20220106
In traditional farming society, names of farmland that used to refer to different plots show unique characteristics of agricultural culture. They are a kind of rural agricultural language resource to be revitalized. This study collected farmland names in Huaiyang District which is a typical traditional agricultural area located in the southeast of Henan Province. After analyzing the collected names of farmland plots, it is found that these terms are mainly used on the basis of rational information related to the farmland. There are two main categories of names: location-motivated and farmland-attribute-motivated. The analysis shows that names of farmland retain rich rural history and culture as well as agricultural knowledge and farming experience. From the perspective of cultivating civilized rural cultural practices and reshaping rural cultural ecology, it is suggested that, with proper consideration of the reality of language life in local agriculture, farmland names should be codified, and farmland language landscape should be developed to protect and inherit these agricultural place names. These names may not only preserve the traditional agricultural experience and carry rural historical memories, but also repose local nostalgia and contribute a unique value and role to China’s Rural Revitalization Strategy.
