14 Studies of Military Languages in China: Development and Research Focus
Liang Xiaobo
DOI: 10.19689/j.cnki.cn10-1361/h.20220601
Based on 3530 research papers on aspects of military languages collected from the CNKI, this study conducts a statistic analysis and visualization of the literature in this field. It is found that the studies of military languages in China maintained at a low level from the 1950s to the beginning of the 21st century. The development of military language studies in China can be roughly divided into two phases time-wise: the first is from the 1990s to the year 2008, and the second is from 2009 until the present. The year 2008 marked a significant turn to a fast-track development. Particularly from 2016 until now, the studies in this field have been developing at a high level, with sub-fields like military translation, conceptual metaphors, and military discourse as research focuses. In comparison to the first phase, the second has a broader research scope, a more global vision, and a more diversified application of theoretical constructs and research methods. Typically, the studies of defense language capacity have emerged as a major focus. In light of the actual military needs for languages and language studies, it is suggested that the military language studies in the future attach more importance to 11 sub-fields, including military phonetical recognition, military terms and expressions, military discourse, and stylistic analysis.

25 Military Terms of the People’s Liberation Army of China: Compilation Process, Characteristics and Innovation
Yang Lu
DOI: 10.19689/j.cnki.cn10-1361/h.20220602
Military Terms of the People’s Liberation Army of China (Military Terms) is a landmark achievement of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA)’s compilation of military terms. Since the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the PLA has compiled six editions of Military Terms. Since the 1980s, some scholars have approached the compilation of military terms from different perspectives. This study reviews the compilation process, highlights some characteristics of the compilation, and calls for innovations in compilation. The compilation of the Military Terms has developed and progressed with the advance of the people’s armed forces and has experienced the embryonic period, the initial period, and the development period. The compilation process has followed the pace of military development, highlighted military characteristics, focused on warfighting, adopted an approach of “joint operations”, worked to build a high-quality scientific research brand, and formed distinctive characteristics of the times, the armed forces, and military practices. In a new era, the compilation of military terms needs to accurately grasp the new situation of military building and development, actively adapt to the new changes of deepening reform, make innovations in terms of the category, content, medium, and mechanism of the new edition, and strive for new achievements worthy of the times.

34 Exploring the Interoperability of Military Language Capability from the Perspective of War Narrative
Ma Xiaolei, Wen Yue and Zhang Ren
DOI: 10.19689/j.cnki.cn10-1361/h.20220603
Verbal confrontation is an integral part of modern war. The cooperative use of language and other means of warfare can help manage the crisis, deter potential enemies, shape the situation, and gain the initiative. While the construction of military language capability has been a research focus, few studies have attempted to explore its cooperation with other military capabilities. This paper suggests that a comprehensive rather than an isolated perspective should be taken to examine the alignment of language use and other military actions. Using war narrative as an analytical framework, we argue that the manipulative use of language can contribute to an intended narrative by communicating war messages, depicting war processes, unifying war activities, and influencing target audience’s cognition. Successful language interoperability should be based on shared knowledge and mutual understanding with the purpose of achieving complementary advantages. Taking Iraq War as an example, this article explains how the consistent and cooperative use of language can contribute to a favorable war narrative by highlighting critical moments in a war timeline, organizing the war process in a narrative link, supporting other military actions, and stimulating the emotional reactions in the target audience. It is suggested that future studies on military language capability should be focused on its interoperability mechanism, generation process, and construction strategies.

44 Cross-Cultural Communication of the United Nations Military Observers: Status Quo, Problems and Reflections
Li Hongqian and Li Changrong
DOI: 10.19689/j.cnki.cn10-1361/h.20220604
The United Nations (UN) staff officers and experts on peacekeeping missions are collectively referred to as UN Military Observers. Peacekeeping missions require them to have good cross-cultural communication skills, which consist of, amongst others, a suitable English language qualification, a full understanding of the culture of the mission area or country, and the ability to use appropriate communication strategies. A reflection of the first author’s personal experience as UN Military Observer shows that the Observers’ cross-cultural communication is often beset with problems such as insufficient language competence, lack of cultural knowledge for target countries, and inadequate communication strategies. The article puts forward some suggestions for the cultivation of cross-cultural communication capability for the Chinese UN Military Observers, which can be a reference for the selection of Chinese UN Military Observers and the expansion of international vision in officer professionalization.

56 Understanding Ourselves: On Language and Thought
Noam Chomsky
DOI: 10.19689/j.cnki.cn10-1361/h.20220605
Departing from the Delphi Oracle, this article contends that knowing ourselves requires us to realize the species properties that are common to humans. The article argues that it is language and thought—the two fundamental species properties—that distinguish humans from all other species in the living world. Language and thought hold a relation of identity: language is a system for generating thought, and thought is what is generated by language. They are common to humans and in important ways distinctive to the human species. Through looking back on the relevant discourse in intellectual history, this article reviews the epistemic tradition of generativity, universality, and creativity concerning language and thought among the thinkers and scientists, and emphasizes the “Miracle Creed” that scientists adhere to in the process of revealing the “simplicity” behind the complex appearances. In addition, the article reiterates the “Galilean Challenge” of language and thought, and argues for the “Strong Minimalist Thesis” approach to language research as well as the “Speech Act” perspective of the referential relation between words and objects. In the concluding remarks, the article revisits the common species properties and the crises that human beings are faced with, calling for more attention to and consideration of these issues, and alerting to the grave impact these crises may have on human existence.

77 Impacts of Chomsky’s Language Theory in China: Enchantment of Simplicity as a “Miracle Creed”
Si Fuzhen, Li Fuqiang and Kang Xing
DOI: 10.19689/j.cnki.cn10-1361/h.20220606

Revolving around the seminar concept of simplicity as the “Miracle Creed”, as claimed by Einstein and Chomsky, this paper attempts to appropriate its implications as emphasized by Chomsky and evaluate the impact this principle has on Chinese linguistic study. The paper first offers a recount of the translation and dissemination of Chomsky’s theory and ideas in China, with a focus mainly on literature translation and extensive local application, including topic-focus conferences ever organized and research platforms developed. Then, the bulk of the paper is devoted to the application of Chomsky’s theory in Chinese language study. It comprehensively reviews the research endeavors of Chinese scholars under the influence of Chomskyan linguistics, involving topics such as language universality vs. language diversity, the nature of simplicity principle, and methodologies regarding theory formulation and theory evaluation. These studies inspired by Chomsky’s theory range from Mandarin Chinese, Chinese dialects, ancient Chinese, and languages of ethnic minorities within China, to child language acquisition and elderly language cognition. In conclusion, the paper also examines the positive roles that Chomskyan ideas play in the construction of linguistics as an academic discipline in Chinese universities.

85 On the Constraint of the Human Habitat on the Design Principles and the Operating Mechanism of Language
Yuan Yulin
DOI: 10.19689/j.cnki.cn10-1361/h.20220607
Based on a critical review of Hockett’s (1960) discussion of underlying design features of human language and Tomasello’s (2010) psychological focus on human communication, this paper attempts to argue for the importance of humanizing and historical dimensions in language computerization study. This paper examines what Hockett (1960) proposed and referred to as 13 design features by which human language is characterized with a focus on two of these features: discreteness and duality of patterning. I first discuss three different ways of defining the discreteness of linguistic signs and the respective focal points of these three definitions and introduce methods to integrate the discrete attributes of linguistic signs into continuous vectors as well as computational applications of these methods. Secondly, I look into the similarity between the linguistic system and the biological system in terms of their duality of patterning, including how relevant algorithms and models in the field of natural language processing are applied in molecular biological studies. Finally, this paper turns to discuss Tomasello’s (2010) theory regarding the origination of human communications and his ideas about the cooperative psychological platform. While showing that any effort to delve into an underlying complicated and self-sufficient structure is bound to be unrealistic, this paper argues that linguistic researchers should locate language in the human habitat (i.e., the real situation in which human beings exist and evolve) thus to reflect upon the design principles and the operating mechanism of language. In so doing, a greater prospect can be obtained into the structural patterns and functional utilities of language with an aim of opening up a linguistic approach with prominent humanistic considerations.
