The Inner Logic and Practice Path of Language Assisting Rural Revitalization
Huang Longguang and Yang Hui
DOI: 10.19689/j.cnki.cn10-1361/h.20230502
With the nationwide implementation of the rural revitalization strategy, the role of languages in China’s rural revitalization has been obtaining much academic attention. This study focuses on the inner logic and practice path of language assisting rural revitalization. Against the background of rural revitalization, the functions of rural languages are gradually changing, thus bringing changes to rural language life. Language assistance in rural revitalization has inherent logic in terms of culture, society, institution, and economy. Correspondingly, four practice paths have been formed, including anchoring key groups for two-way language learning, promoting modernization of rural language governance, moderately developing and utilizing language resources, and comprehensively safeguarding and inheriting rural languages. There is no universal path for languages to assist rural revitalization, and creativity is needed based on the specific resources and advantages of the rural area. This study argues that the study of language assistance in rural revitalization must return to the rural language life, describe and record rural language facts and experiences, explain the local mechanisms and laws of language assistance in rural revitalization, provide rich rural language facts and language rules for sociolinguistics, and improve the academic explanatory power and disciplinary imagination of linguistics to focus on people’s livelihood.

A Study of Language and Society in Junying Village of Xiamen
Fu Yirong
DOI: 10.19689/j.cnki.cn10-1361/h.20230503
China’s modernization is inseparable from its rapid urbanization, which has brought about and continues to bring about significant changes to China’s rural areas. Against this background, China has begun to implement its rural revitalization strategy. This study focuses on Junying Village of Xiamen, the most economically developed city in Fujian Province. Junying Village maintains its original rural style because of its location in a mountainous area. By taking advantage of its own natural conditions and cultural characteristics, Junying Village has taken some measures to develop itself and has achieved remarkable results. In this process of revitalization, both Mandarin and Hokkien are widely used and linguistic landscapes also abound in the village, and they all play an irreplaceable and important role. In general, the language life of Junying Village is characterized by a relatively stable and harmonious relationship. However, Junying Village is now under the great pressure of rural population loss. It needs not only to upgrade and optimize its existing industries but also create new ones, which will place a higher demand on the language capacity of this village.

Language Use and Rural Governance of New Rural Sages: A Case Study of Zhongzha Village
Zhao Chunyan
DOI: 10.19689/j.cnki.cn10-1361/h.20230504
The new rural sages link tradition and modernity, rural and urban areas, and play a unique role in rural governance. However, the linguistic research on this group still remains blank. Through long-term participant observation and in-depth interviews, this study offers a multi-sited ethnography of JC, a new rural sage in Zhongzha Village, a Tibetan-inhabited village in Sichuan Province. The language life of JC involved in the language worlds inside and outside the village as well as the connection between these two language worlds is presented in a panoramic way with first-hand materials such as observation logs and interview recordings. JC’s language life is divided into four circles: Tibetan inner circle, Tibetan outer circle, Chinese circle, and English circle. In the form of speech acts, he has played an important role in many aspects such as villagers’ unity, external exchanges, language planning, economic development, cultural inheritance, and national unity. According to Wittgenstein’s theory of language games, further analysis shows that JC’s language strategies and skills have effectively solved the dilemma of weak rural governance and improved the ability and effectiveness of vertical governance of rural governments and horizontal autonomy of villagers to a certain extent. It also shows that the combination of language and information networks gives JC more possibilities for organizational coordination and social management and provides him with richer choices and broader prospects for exploring innovative methods of rural governance. The language life of JC-like Tibetan folk elites suggests that the sense of the community of the Chinese nation should be cultivated through the community of the Chinese national language. From the perspective of language planning, two suggestions are put forward. First, great importance should be attached to the modernization of the Tibetan language to make it more adaptable to modern society. Second, we should give full play to the role of new rural sages, explore feasible modes to promote Putonghua among new rural sages and guide them to tell Chinese stories well and make Chinese voices heard.

A Survey of the Language Life in Sanshilitun Village: From the Perspective of Rural Revitalization
Yan Ke
DOI: 10.19689/j.cnki.cn10-1361/h.20230505
This paper investigates the language life in Sanshilitun, a traditional village with historical interest in Nanyang city, Henan Province, with a purpose to find out how language causes can contribute to rural revitalization . As an epitome of numerous historic villages in China, Sanshilitun faces the crisis of empty nesters in the process of modernization, yet regains vitality in the historical era of rural revitalization. In the development of cultural and tourism industry, the local villagers have valorized language and writing to promote rural revitalization. The results of our fieldwork show that the changes of the times have left discernable traces in the local language life, including the increase of signage intensity and types in the linguistic landscape, diversification of communication codes, and decline and endangerment of agricultural terminology. In terms of language knowledge, it shows that language and writing are widely used to represent cultural heritage, whereby Chinese character writing creates a vibrant cultural atmosphere and enriches the cultural life in the local context. In term of language technology, most villagers have become digital citizens, who have strong dependence on internet in daily life, entertainment and career development. The long-term development of rural revitalization hinges on quality and efficient language life. The longstanding autonomous language life in rural areas calls for more language planning, language assistance, language science popularization and language education in order to be instrumental to rural revitalization.

Thirty Years of Dictionary Market in China
Shen Wei and Li Fei
DOI: 10.19689/j.cnki.cn10-1361/h.20230506
China has a booming dictionary market, yet its research on dictionary market is relatively sparse. Based on data collected from the National Publications Data Center and the OpenBook Retail Market Monitor System, this study offers an overview of the development of dictionary market in China. In view of the significant changes in publication volume, product formats, and sales channels since the establishment of ChinaLex in 1992, China’s dictionary market in the past three decades can be divided into three stages: development stage (1992–2002), mature stage (2003–2015) and transformation stage (2016–2022). In the course of the development, the forces of state guidance and market regulation combined to stimulate the transformation of the dictionary market. More specifically, the main factors contributing to the development of dictionary market include the state guidance on dictionary compilation and publication, the participation of ChinaLex in standardizing the dictionary market, the response of dictionary products to market demand, and the growing market awareness among dictionary publishers. The main challenges facing the thriving dictionary market include blindly following trend in title selection, weak copyright awareness, disorder in new media marketing, low-standard administration in cultural companies, scarcity of academic research, and lack of profitable model for digital dictionaries. Looking into the future, we suggest in this paper that the entire dictionary community make joint efforts to standardize the market environment, strike a balance between social and economic benefits, explore digital transformation, and cultivate user consumption mindset, with a purpose to promote the sustained and healthy development of China’s dictionary market.

Thirty Years of Development of Chinese Dictionary and Reference Book Digitization
Lv Haichun
DOI: 10.19689/j.cnki.cn10-1361/h.20230507
Marked by the establishment of the China Society of Dictionary and Reference Book in 1992, the digital advancement of Chinese dictionaries has unfolded along two parallel trajectories over the past three decades. One trajectory involves the digital transformation of dictionary product forms, while the other encompasses the digitization of dictionary compilation and editing methods; these two pathways have progressively converged. Scholarly exploration, particularly in the realm of “multimodal integrated dictionaries and reference books”, has significantly propelled the digitization process. Amidst this digital progression, non-traditional entities, leveraging technological advantages, have taken the lead, whereas conventional institutions have been constrained by multifaceted challenges that impede their integration and development. The lack of full integration of the nascent theory and practice, a severe shortage in multidisciplinary talents, and the recurrent emergence of intellectual property issues constitute primary challenges in the current digitization course of dictionaries and reference books. To ensure the high-quality development of digitization, innovation and integration must be prioritized. The following strategic recommendations are proposed: while advancing dictionaries and reference books towards intelligent knowledge and educational services, practitioners should also focus on facilitating the transformation and upgrade of dictionary and reference book production paradigms and marketing models. It is also important to bolster the construction of data resources, to jointly enhance a virtuous ecosystem for the dictionary and reference book industry, to intensify academic research, and to cultivate interdisciplinary talents.
