DOI: 10.19689/j.cnki.cn10-1361/h.20240301
The world today appears to be in an expedited transition into a new era characterized by the amalgamation of natural human, robots and digital human. The era of a “natural human-robot-digital human symbiosis” has produced a plethora of previously unseen new phenomena, forms, and trends. In this context, language life is also undergoing extensive and profound changes. In terms of language use, four new forms of interactions have emerged: An interaction between natural human and digital human, that between digital humans, that between robots and digital human, and that among natural human, robots, and digital human. The landscape of language learning may encompass natural human language learning, robotic language learning, and digital human language learning alongside  robot-assisted human language learning. In the field of language research, the surge of new data, methods, and ideas contributes to the rapid development of novel cross-cutting areas, such as language resource science and digital linguistics. Future language research needs to apprehend the development trends of the times and adopt a holistic perspective and systematic thinking to provide better assistance for societal advancement.

DOI: 10.19689/j.cnki.cn10-1361/h.20240302
Signing avatar represents an advancement in AI avatar technology, enhancing information accessibility for the deaf individuals. This innovation has garnered wide attention home and abroad and has been implemented in various domains such as television news, public services, major events, and educational settings for the deaf. This paper reviews the current situation of the signing avatar industry in China, highlighting its peculiar predicament of being acknowledged primarily by external observers while negatively reacted by deaf communities and sign language interpretation industry. The sector grapples with several challenges: the distinctive aspects of sign language are often overlooked by the researchers/developers; there is a scarcity of accessible high-quality sign language datasets; and the current technological solutions do not fully meet the requirements of the deaf community. This paper proposes that it is imperative to establish regulations for the industry, be vigilant of potential ethical concerns, address the specific needs of deaf individuals, and foster international partnerships to promote the industry’s sustainable development.

In the digital era, the language industry is a key driver of national economic growth and a significant contributor to the vibrant language life in society. It thus plays a pivotal role in transitioning socio-economic dynamics from traditional to modern frameworks. Propelled by technological and data-driven advancements, the industry is evolving, marked by strategic macro-policy development, digitization of language resources, advancements in language intelligence, industry integration, service model diversification, and a broadening global impact. Currently, in the contexts of thriving digital economy, rapidly advancing digital technologies, and a strong focus on nurturing talents, the language industry in China is encountering unprecedented opportunities for expansion through global collaboration. Nonetheless, there are serious challenges such as the lack of industry standards, underdeveloped language resources, a shortage of skilled professionals, limited industry scalability, and uneven development inside the industry. To address these issues, strategies we propose include reinforcing policy guidance to meet market needs, emphasizing digital-driven approaches to cultivate talents, enhancing industry transformation via research partnerships, promoting organized labor division for industry concentration, focusing on societal benefits, and increasing international openness.

38 On the Governance of Language Intelligence
Rao Gaoqi and Zhou Liwei
DOI: 10.19689/j.cnki.cn10-1361/h.20240304
The governance of language intelligence has profoundly transformed language governance while becoming a new focus of language governance itself. Governance of language intelligence can leverage data and market dynamics, as data serve as the starting point for research and development of intelligent technologies, directly sourced from society and markets, and market applications serve as the endpoint and ultimate driving force for research and development. From the perspective of data governance, language data resources determine key aspects of language intelligence such as the performance, technological implementation, critical domain applications, and ethical security. However, many industries in China currently exhibit low levels of data digitalization, poor data quality, limited domestication of critical domain data, and low standards of ethical security. Evaluation governance, organized by academic and governmental institutions, has become a key driver for advancing intelligent technologies and products, forming a closed loop of "data-technology-evaluation." Yet, there is room for improvement in China's technical evaluations in terms of authority, influence, scientific planning, and design. Security governance faces challenges of capabilities which lag behind demands, and ethical security issues which are reflected in language resources, applications, and societal culture. Therefore, effective language intelligence governance should be grounded in data and driven by evaluations to enhance language intelligence capabilities, while ensuring security across data, evaluations, and usage, and emphasizing ethical considerations in principles, organization, implementation, disciplines, and societal culture.

51 Media-Converged Dictionaries: Theoretical Methodology and Practical Evolution
Zhang Yihua
DOI: 10.19689/j.cnki.cn10-1361/h.20240305
From the emergence of electronic dictionaries in the 1980s to the proposal of media-converged dictionaries by the China Association for Lexicography in 2019, the lexicographical community has recognized that the evolution of dictionaries from “multimedia” to “media-converged” is not an increase in the number of “media”, but involves issues such as the converging mechanism between media and modalities, and among various modalities. The media convergence (forms) should promote the modality (content), and the convergence of lexicographical definition and annotation is the core of media-converged dictionaries. Modality is the mental image of the referent of a defined word projected in people’s minds through the cognitive sensory, and it is in the multimodal contexts that lexical meaning can be easily understood. Media-converged dictionaries should integrate relevant medium, media, and modalities according to the requirement of lexical definition, so that they can jointly participate in the process of semantic representation and become important defining elements. The paper aims at clarifying the core implications, converging elements and paths, multimodal elements, and theoretical basis of media-converged dictionaries, whose textual features can be summarized as polarization, datafication, multimodalization, platformization, and networkization. The paper also examines how the multimedia features of existing digital dictionaries are achieved and their actual status from three perspectives: the production resources, knowledge texts, and digital technologies for making media converged and multimodal dictionaries.

61 The Concept and Realization Path of Media-Converged Dictionary─Take JUZI Hanyu as an Example
Yang Yuling
With the advancement of technology and the digitization of information, the way information is produced and disseminated is undergoing a media convergence transformation. Dictionaries are an important carrier for storing and disseminating information, and dictionary research and development should seize the opportunity of transformation and follow the path of media convergence. “Media-Converged dictionary” is an innovative concept that requires theoretical thinking to guide practice and also needs practical implementation, which in turn can feed back into theory. Given that there are more theoretical discussions of Chinese media-converged dictionaries but fewer practical explorations, this paper takes JUZI Chinese as an example to discuss the connection from theory to practice and the feedback from practice to theory of media-converged dictionaries from four dimensions: dictionary content, production process, usage process, and product service, in order to provide a practical plan for the breakthrough development of Chinese learning dictionaries. In view of the practice of JUZI Chinese, this paper argues that for the healthy development of media-converged dictionary, it is necessary to construct an evaluation system of Chinese media-converged dictionaries in a scientific way, establish, improve, and implement a sharing platform of media convergence, and actively explore ways of publicity, operation and profit making for media-converged dictionaries.

73 The Media Convergence Innovation in APP Dictionaries: A Big Data Analysis on the APP Store
Jiang Wenping and Deng Lin
DOI: 10.19689/j.cnki.cn10-1361/h.20240307
APP dictionaries on smartphones have provided much more possible solutions for media-converged dictionaries than the other digital counterparts. With the analytics tool Data. ai, the present study explores the media convergence features of 2360 APP dictionaries sampled from Apple store. It has been found that APP dictionaries have been converged with multiple languages, dictionaries, modalities, and query modes. They have been connected to other application tools, and the roles of all the communicative participants in APP dictionaries have become interchangeable as well. However, no matter how dramatically the APP dictionaries progress towards media-converged ones, they would and should not forsake dictionary quality, norms, services and identity for the sake of technology, innovation, information and function.

Tian Xiaolin and Tian Jing
DOI: 10.19689/j.cnki.cn10-1361/h.20240308
It has been thirty years since the concept of “community expression” was advanced and under investigation. This paper provides a concise overview of the concept evolution, outlines the fundamental theories, and the developing trajectories around the main research lines. By organizing the existing findings, this paper summarizes the research content into three categories: the analysis of “name” and “reality” concerning the concept, the collection of community expression along with case studies, and the dictionary-based research. Furthermore, it identifies four key characteristics of community expression research: the broad applicability of the research field, the complementarity of the research perspectives, the scientific rigor of the research process, and the coherence of the research tasks align with a common goal. Based on the analysis of the problems of the existing research, we propose several directions for future research: field investigations to prioritize on-the-ground study, the differences and similarities between community expression and its related terms should be further clarified, more attention should be paid to the application value of the community expression, and efforts should be made to enhance the internationalization of the theory of community expression.
