Abstract:This paper presents an overview of research about communication in eldercare, with special focus on Japan. It works out the main characteristics of this special type of communication as they have been identified in previous research outside Japan, and compares these to studies conducted in Japan. A comparison shows that many of the observations made by Japanese researchers concur with findings from studies in other cultural contexts. These include an overall scarcity of communication, the influence of the care tasks on the verbal interaction, power differences between residents and staff, as well as the use of politeness to deal with these. On the other hand, the paper also identifies two factors that to some extent appear specific to the Japanese research context: the advent of foreign care workers and the use of robots and other AI devices.
