A Multi-Comparative Approach to the Study of Child Language Development in China
Zhou Peng and Xie Yuan
DOI: 10.19689/j.cnki.cn10-1361/h.20230301
To address the major limitations of previous research on child language development, this paper proposes a multi-comparative approach, viz. (i) comparisons are made across different populations and developmental stages using a combination of cross-sectional and longitudinal designs; (ii) comparisons are conducted between laboratory and open environments that incorporate crucial home environmental factors; and (iii) comparisons are made across typologically distinct languages using the rich diversity of Chinese languages. By elaborating on the multi-comparative approach, the paper aims to point towards three essential “shifts” in the field of child language research: (i) to construct causal models instead of investigating simple correlations; (ii) to study language development in natural environment rather than in laboratory settings; and (iii) to focus on the rich diversity of Chinese languages instead of merely looking for comparisons between Chinese and Indo-European languages.

Family Literacy Education in China: Review and Reflections
Li Yingzi and Wang Pingli
DOI: 10.19689/j.cnki.cn10-1361/h.20230302
Family literacy education has received much academic attention in the past decades. This study clarifies the connotations and denotations of family literacy at home and abroad, and reviews relevant institutional building and the development of theories and practices in China’s family literacy education. The main characteristics of China’s family literacy education include a tendency to support children with disabilities, a focus on home-school cooperation, and a dominant form of parent-child reading. Its main problems include: 1) Theoretical and practical research is not yet sufficient, especially for localized theoretical research considering national conditions; 2) There are not many participating departments, and China lags behind some countries in terms of the societal mobilization; 3) The focus is mostly on children, to the neglect of parents as adults and the family as a unit composed of parents and children. This study suggests that we should attach more importance to the research and practice of family literacy, develop family education theories with Chinese characteristics; strengthen departmental collaboration, government leadership, and participation of the entire society; build a “children and adults” literacy community, develop intergenerational projects, and shift the focus from children to families.

A Corpus Driven Study on Development of Children’s Evaluative Expression from the Perspective of the Acquisition of Evaluative Adverbs
Rao Hongquan
DOI: 10.19689/j.cnki.cn10-1361/h.20230303
Evaluation is one of the key pragmatic proficiency of children, and evaluation expression is an important lens for observing children’s pragmatic development. Based on five typical and relatively highly used evaluative adverbs as samples, this paper attempts to describe the children’s initial acquisition of core semantics and typical functions, as well as the process of calibration, adjustment, expansion and improvement. There five adverbs, namely,
yuanlai
‘turn out to be’,
fanzheng
‘anyway’,
daodi
‘after all’,
zhenghao
‘by coincidence/fortunately’,
mingming
‘obviously/plainly’, were collected through exhaustive extraction from three diachronic corpora. The purpose of this research is to conduct an in-depth and meticulous depiction of the development of children’s evaluation expression in pragmatic performance in a detailed manner. As an abstract grammatical element, evaluative adverbs appear in the early childhood period of 3–4 years old when children start to develop an adult-like language system. At this stage, children’s language system has evolved to a point of performing both conceptual and interpersonal functions, and the evaluative meaning of these adverbs is constructed by children in interaction, transformed in cognition and shaped up in pragmatics. Future research on children’s evaluation expression should be conducted in diverse communicative settings, multiple linguistic functions, and multi-dimensional language education, thus enables us to improve children’s language development, enhance their thinking abilities, and promote their character cultivation.

A Study of Child-Directed Speech of Kindergarten Teachers
Li Jiantao
DOI: 10.19689/j.cnki.cn10-1361/h.20230304
Children acquire language in interactions, and all groups with whom children interact may influence their language development, including kindergarten teachers who need to create a positive language environment. The language used by kindergarten teachers for instruction is referred to as Child-Directed Speech (CDS). This study collects kindergarten teaching videos from Bilibili and audio recordings. It examines the longitudinal dynamics of kindergarten teachers’ CDS along four dimensions: phonology (such as pitch and speech rate), vocabulary (including interrogative sentence final particles, epistemic modality, and pronouns), syntax (such as the mean length of utterances), and pragmatic strategies (question types). The study reveals deficiencies in the developmentality and proposes several strategies for improvement, such as increasing the average speech rate, lowering the mean pitch, increasing syntactic complexity, and using more open-ended questions in the second semester of senior-class children. Improving the developmentality of kindergarten teachers’ CDS can organically integrate language preparation into the kindergarten curriculum and facilitate a scientific transition from kindergartens to primary schools.

Establishment of Chinese Character Identification Test and Construction of Local Norms for Primary School Children in Hong Kong
Wu Qiuping and Zheng Peiyun
DOI: 10.19689/j.cnki.cn10-1361/h.20230305
Chinese character literacy is key for young children to develop reading and cognitive skills. However, there are no effective evaluation tools with local norms to gauge the Chinese character literacy for primary school students in Hong Kong. The present research attempts to construct the database of commonly used Chinese characters from Primary 1 to 6 Chinese textbooks in Hong Kong, and use it to develop two Chinese character literacy test models, namely the test of Chinese identification accuracy (HK-CIAT) and the test of Chinese identification fluency (HK-CIFT). The tests and their validity criteria verifications were implemented in 12 primary schools at different ranking levels (high, medium, low) in Hong Kong in order to establish grade-based norms for students’ Chinese identification accuracy and fluency. The results of the trial implementations indicate that the two tests can provide effective evaluation to individual students’ Chinese character identification ability and developmental tendency, and predict school students’ comprehensive Chinese language ability. With a clear grade-based distinction, HK-CIAT and HK-CIFT are the first two standardized Chinese character literacy tests that take into account both the level of learning and word frequency of Chinese characters. The tests are characterized by easy operation, moderate length and difficulty level, wide application to a wide range of age groups, and availability of local norms. In addition, they can effectively differentiate typically developed students and students with reading difficulties in Chinese character identification and fluency, which may help educators to bring in relevant educational support in time.

On Chinese Scholars’ Spirit as Manifested in Lexicographical Work
Du Xiang
DOI: 10.19689/j.cnki.cn10-1361/h.20230306
For thousands of years, the compilation of ancient Chinese dictionaries has formed a fine tradition of pragmatic orientation, pursuance of an evidence-based foundation, and owned a reputation of both maintaining heritage and striving for innovation. When it came to modern and contemporary times, classic dictionaries, such as
Ci Yuan
,
Ci Hai
,
Modern Chinese Dictionary
, and
Encyclopedia of China
, have developed their respective expressions of spirit corresponding to each of these classic works. The spiritual manifestation of dictionary making demonstrated Chinese lexicographers’ core values and spiritual demeanor which serve as a powerful spiritual force. From the perspective of history, the gist of the spirit in Chinese dictionary scholars can be expressed as: the patriotic spirit of cultural responsibility, the optimization of preserving inheritance and pursuing innovation, the craftsman spirit of concentration and perseverance, and the dedication spirit of resisting external influence. In the new era, Chinese lexicographers are endowed with new missions. Faced with the challenges of new technologies, they would vigorously promote this spirit in dictionary compilation, improve the construction of lexicographic content, diversify the forms of lexicographic services, and further research commitment from theoretic exploration of lexicography to active application of lexicographic theories in language use.

Three Decades of Critical Evaluation of Chinese Dictionary Development (1992–2022)
Lang Jingjing
DOI: 10.19689/j.cnki.cn10-1361/h.20230307
In the 30 years since the establishment of the China Dictionary Association, dictionary criticism and review as a research cause has seen dynamic development. However, relatively little has been found in exploration of theoretical pursuance of dictionary criticism, the vast majority of papers are on the development of dictionary perse. The main findings can be summarized as follows: The compilation advantages of various dictionaries summarized are helpful for the revision of similar dictionaries; criticism of the poor quality of dictionary production is relatively rare in articles focusing on dictionary making; the coverage of the latest published dictionary is quite limited; less attention has been paid to the process and style of dictionary compilation. It is proposed to realize the importance of supplementary role for work related to criticism of dictionary compilation and revision, and its contribution to the development of dictionary criticism in China. In the future, dictionary criticism should spare no effort in rejecting poor-quality dictionaries and awarding high-quality ones. At the same time, attention should be paid to the emerging subjects while strengthening professional editors’ ability for criticism.
