Abstract:This article aims to explore the connotations, dimensions and applications of the concept of “language life” based on Fishman’s “domain” theory. The author argues that language life always takes place in a specifi c domain, and different domains may shape different language life. The study of language life should be carried out by examining and integrating the specific domain where language life is rooted. From the perspective of language life, this article analyzes the domains of second language (L2) learners and learners of Chinese as heritage language in Chinese international education. It reveals and explains the influence factors of the vitality and changes of language life in different domains of Chinese acquisition, inheritance and maintenance. The analysis and findings in this study can be helpful to cope with the practical problems and challenges faced in the field of Chinese international education.
