Abstract:Based on major academic work, this paper attempts to review the research on the linguistic varieties used in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Being composed of four central cities of Guangzhou, Hongkong, Macao and Shenzhen, this area uses Cantonese as the main local medium of communication. In this paper, research on Cantonese as well as the other local dialects like Hakka and Min used in this area is examined with an aim to show linguistic patterns prevalent in this area. In addition, the co-existence of “Putonghua-Cantonese-other dialects” in Shenzhen is also taken into consideration. Though the dominant variety in the Greater Bay Area is Cantonese, it is also noticed that this area is linguistically inclusive and open towards other varieties, which encourages three emerging foci of research: the teaching of Putonghua and Cantonese, the use of Cantonese, and the study and use of written Cantonese. The findings show that, in facing structural changes of society brought by nationalization and internationalization and being inspired by the idea of new multicultural society, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area develops a healthy ecolinguistic environment of multilingulism.
