Abstract:In the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, the language matrix constitutes one of the most important issues to be considered by the authorities and policymakers. This paper spells out four fundamental language issues that need to be accommodated in the multilingual environment in the area. First is the issue of language use. In the fields of urban life, economy, and cultural activities as well as education, media and governance, the multi-faceted relationships among Mandarin, Cantonese, English and Portuguese and among simplified and traditional Chinese characters as well as alphabetic scripts for English and Portuguese have to be coordinated in order to construct a harmonious language life in the area. Second is the issue of language service. The development of the Greater Bay Area as an international community will generate increasing multilingual needs, and require multilingual services. In response to that, it is necessary to establish a strong language service team and seek intelligent technical solutions for language services. The third are language issues in emergency management. In case of emergency, the governments of the Greater Bay Area should improve its multilingual ability for emergency management, establish a professional emergency-management language team, and provide intelligent language technical equipment to cope with emergencies. Lastly is the issue of language informatization. The construction of a smart Greater Bay Area cannot do without the support of language informatization. The planners of the Great Bay Area should consider how to take full advantage of language informatization in intelligent language learning, the construction of a smart greater urban area and the economic and technological developments in the area.
