Abstract:Soon after the outbreak of COVID-19, linguists in China formed the “Epidemic Language Service Corps” and developed a series of language service products, such as “Hubei Dialects Glossary for Fighting Epidemic”, “Foreign Language Glossary for Fighting Epidemic” and “Concise Chinese for Fighting Epidemic”, which have provided practical language services of public emergency for fighting against the COVID-19 epidemic. This work also helped accumulate valuable experience in building the national language emergency services. Taking these into account, we suggest that the construction of national language emergency services should be in line with the general picture of a comprehensive planning. Based on all-round preparation, this practice has proven to be efficient in responding to public emergency, and a language service system is taking shape. Looking beyond we should consider on one hand to further construct the language emergency service and knowledge base, and on the other to build mobilization mechanisms and security systems. It is also important to implement an emergency language situation monitoring and early-warning system. The practical application of academic resources shows that establishing “Epidemic Language Service Corps” and strengthening academic research in language emergency service are becoming increasingly necessary. All of these have spurred us to believe that the Epidemic Language Service Corps should offer long term and stable language emergency services. Rather than what is described above, it is important to strengthen the problem-driven language research and attach importance to maintaining necessary scholarship with an aim to cope with the future crisis.
