Abstract:This article aims to provide a short introduction to the emerging field of Linguistic Landscape Studies. It starts off by providing a definition of linguistic landscape and a short history of the field. The second part summarizes the ten most important edited books in order to provide a basic overview. It further mentions the specialized journal ‘Linguistic Landscape’ and the dedicated online bibliography. A summary is given of the qualitative ethnographic approach and the quantitative variationist approach as the two main methodological approaches. The third part gives an outline of the main points of projects on important themes like the spread of English or language policy or studies in educational contexts. Thereafter some of the challenges to the field are presented, among those, its theoretical heterogeneity and some methodological issues such as the unit of analysis and the dynamic nature of the signs. Mixed methods are seen as a way forward. In the final part future perspectives are discussed among which technologically innovative displays of language, Augmented Reality, but also issues around contestation and power or topics like language diversity and multilingualism. The expectation is that the field of linguistic landscape studies will continue to develop new and creative approaches.
