Abstract:Verbal confrontation is an integral part of modern war. The cooperative use of language and other means of warfare can help manage the crisis, deter potential enemies, shape the situation, and gain the initiative. While the construction of military language capability has been a research focus, few studies have attempted to explore its cooperation with other military capabilities. This paper suggests that a comprehensive rather than an isolated perspective should be taken to examine the alignment of language use and other military actions. Using war narrative as an analytical framework, we argue that the manipulative use of language can contribute to an intended narrative by communicating war messages, depicting war processes, unifying war activities, and influencing target audience’s cognition. Successful language interoperability should be based on shared knowledge and mutual understanding with the purpose of achieving complementary advantages. Taking Iraq War as an example, this article explains how the consistent and cooperative use of language can contribute to a favorable war narrative by highlighting critical moments in a war timeline, organizing the war process in a narrative link, supporting other military actions, and stimulating the emotional reactions in the target audience. It is suggested that future studies on military language capability should be focused on its interoperability mechanism, generation process, and construction strategies.
