Abstract:Marked by the establishment of the China Society of Dictionary and Reference Book in 1992, the digital advancement of Chinese dictionaries has unfolded along two parallel trajectories over the past three decades. One trajectory involves the digital transformation of dictionary product forms, while the other encompasses the digitization of dictionary compilation and editing methods; these two pathways have progressively converged. Scholarly exploration, particularly in the realm of “multimodal integrated dictionaries and reference books”, has significantly propelled the digitization process. Amidst this digital progression, non-traditional entities, leveraging technological advantages, have taken the lead, whereas conventional institutions have been constrained by multifaceted challenges that impede their integration and development. The lack of full integration of the nascent theory and practice, a severe shortage in multidisciplinary talents, and the recurrent emergence of intellectual property issues constitute primary challenges in the current digitization course of dictionaries and reference books. To ensure the high-quality development of digitization, innovation and integration must be prioritized. The following strategic recommendations are proposed: while advancing dictionaries and reference books towards intelligent knowledge and educational services, practitioners should also focus on facilitating the transformation and upgrade of dictionary and reference book production paradigms and marketing models. It is also important to bolster the construction of data resources, to jointly enhance a virtuous ecosystem for the dictionary and reference book industry, to intensify academic research, and to cultivate interdisciplinary talents.
