Abstract
The 70 years of the study of Chinese loanwords after the establishment of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) can be divided into two periods, with each being further divided by two stages. The first period is characterized by the emergence of the study of Chinese loanwords as an independent research subject, whereas the second one could be seen as further development and flourishment. The present article first reviews the early exploration of Chinese loanwords in the first half of the 20thcentury as the background for a deep understanding of the history of the study of the subject during the PRC. In the first period (1949–1976), the study of loanwords in Chinese was conducted from the perspectives of culture, standardization, and linguistics. In the second period (1977–2019), inquiries have been made in theory, sources, roles of Japanese loans, English abbreviation loans, and dictionary compilations. In spite of the progress, the study of loanwords in Chinese is still weak as a subdiscipline of linguistics.
