Abstract

Lü Shuxiang (1904–1998), one of the founders of modern Chinese linguistics, has made outstanding contributions to its construction and development. To a certain extent, his contributions stem from his academic consciousness of “seizing the precious time” and his scientific spirit of “willingness to make up lessons and being good at it”. This article explores not only the origin and implications of Lü’s “Study of Never Being Late” but also the intentions of “Making up Lessons”, thus finding interrelationships between the two issues.
