Abstract

This study examines Macao youth’s language attitudes via the matched guise technique. It compares their language attitudes towards Putonghua(PTH), Cantonese, Portuguese, English, and Cantonese accented PTH with the previous research conducted in Macao, Hong Kong, Beijing and Guangzhou. The findings show that the ratings of Cantonese dialect and PTH in Macao are much higher than the other three places, while the ratings of Cantonese accented PTH are much lower than the other three places, reflecting the uniqueness of Macao. From a diachronic point of view, Macao youth, on the one hand, maintain a high evaluation of Cantonese dialect; on the other hand, their ratings of PTH and Portuguese are also increasing, therefore reflecting their identification with PTH and Portuguese. The study shows the multi-identity development of Macao youth under the influence of the local, national, and international forces. This study further reveals that language attitudes of Macao youth are most affected by local and national forces, while international forces are secondary.
