Abstract

China has shifted its poverty alleviation campaign into the rural revitalization framework since 2021 in order to promote local industrial development, create more habitable rural environment and propel more prosperity for rural lives. Compared to poverty alleviation, the rural revitalization strategy entails a wider geographical area, a longer time span, and more comprehensive objectives. In terms of language, the diversified regions, people and issues involved in the implementation of the strategy may generate more practical needs in language varieties, competencies and functions. Language is an important carrier of knowledge, information and culture in human society, and different languages can play important roles in various aspects and levels of rural revitalization strategy. In this paper, it is argued that the goals of talent revitalization, organizational revitalization, cultural revitalization, industrial revitalization and ecological revitalization can be achieved by implementing national language and standard Chinese character education, foreign language and cross-border language education, national general sign language and Braille education, as well as reinforcing rural language governance, expanding language services, and developing rural language and cultural resources. It is emphasized that the instrumentality of language can contribute to rural revitalization in so far as language-related schemes are planned scientifically and enforced steadily.
