Abstract

Based on the questionnaire responses in the China Labor-force Dynamics Survey administered by Sun Yat-Sen University, this paper adopts an ordered Logit model and a KHB model to explore how and to what extent Putonghua ability can affect farmers’ subjective well-being in the context of rural revitalization. The results of data analysis show that Putonghua ability has the potential to improve farmers’ subjective well-being in significant ways, whereby economic capital, social capital, and information skills are important mediating mechanisms. When the mediating effects are controlled, the impact of Putonghua remains clear and strong. It is also found that the effect of Putonghua ability is more prominent in the regions including Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai, Fujian and Guangdong. In these regions, the mediating effect is mainly mapped as economic capital.  In conclusion, the promotion of Putonghua can narrow the gap between urban and rural development, offer farmers equal opportunities for survival and development, and facilitate the integration of urban and rural areas. With these potential benefits, the farmers’ subjective well-being can be improved, and continuous rural revitalization may be advanced.
