Abstract
The past two decades have witnessed the rapid development of language intelligence and language data research and shown the close interconnection between language intelligence and language data. This study provides a review of language intelligence and language data research over the past two decades. Over the past two decades, the development of language intelligence research can be broadly divided into two periods, with the introduction of ChatGPT in 2022 as the dividing line. The period before 2022 primarily focused on technological advancements, while the period after 2022 is characterized by an increasing emphasis on the impact of language intelligence on linguistic life. Similarly, studies on language data can be delineated by the recognition of data as a production factor, initially confined to linguistic structural data and later expanded to analyses within the context of linguistic life. From the perspective of the three major systems (i.e., disciplinary, academic, and discourse systems), language intelligence research is emerging as an independent discipline and its discourse system is beginning to take shape, with substantial accumulation in academic frameworks. At the same time, language data research, as an emerging research field, is burgeoning with potential. With the advent of “the era of human-machine symbiosis” and “the era of human-cyber-physical systems”, future research in language intelligence and language data is poised to become increasingly significant and holds great promise.
