Abstract
This study provides a review and prospect of the research on language life in special fields of China. The special fields refer to special groups and special settings as opposed to general populations and everyday settings. Language life in special fields is defined as a variety of activities in the special fields of using, learning, and researching language texts, language knowledge, and language technology. The studies of language life in the special fields of China are characterized by the formation of a cohesive academic community over the past 20 years. Researchers focus on the problems faced by special groups (e.g., people with language disorders, the elderly, immigrants, and migrant workers) and in special settings (e.g., emergency scenarios) which might produce negative effects on the quality of life. They explore a set of empirical research methods that highlight the research perspectives, conceptualize language services in line with the national strategy, and try to make up for the shortcomings through the improvement of language ability and the provision of language services. Future studies should promote the sharing of data and methods with the help of digital intelligence technology, strengthen its own research system, improve relevant policies and regulations, and continuously solve the new problems.
